(Red Deer, Alberta)

A municipal by-election will be held on April 22, 2024, following a resolution passed by City Council during today’s regular council meeting.

“The City is incredibly saddened by the loss of Councillor Michael Dawe. This has unfortunately created a vacancy on Council that we are required to fill within 120 days,” said Jessica Robinson, Returning Officer for The City of Red Deer. “The Municipal Government Act requires us to fill that vacancy because we are more than 18 months away from the next municipal election.”

Nominations will be accepted starting tomorrow, January 23, 2024 and the nomination period will close at noon on nomination day, March 25, 2024. Candidate information packages will be available at elections.reddeer.ca starting Wednesday, January 24, 2024 and candidate names will be posted on March 27, 2024.

In passing the resolution to hold the municipal by-election, City Council also passed a resolution to cancel the municipal census that was being planned for 2024, as having both activities running simultaneously would put additional strain on staff, budget, and recruitment efforts for temporary staff.

All information about the upcoming municipal by-election will be found at elections.reddeer.ca
