    SYPKES, Thomas

    For City Councillor
    City of Red Deer

    About the Candidate

My wife and I, with our 3 children, are proud to call Red Deer home. Born and raised in and around Red Deer, I attended RDP and the University of Lethbridge before coming back to work in the local construction industry for 15 years. I bring a unique perspective as someone who knows the workings of private industry. I strongly believe that in a time of extremes, we need to work together to find the middle ground and make the hard decisions for the good of our city and those who call it home.

    Candidate Priorities

Fiscal ResponsibilityPush for a long term plan to balance revenues with expenses. I believe issues such as the budget deficit, unreasonable tax hikes, and even the safe staffing issue with our local fire department, are all symptoms of a larger root issue.
Revamp ProcurementThe procurement process has gone away from low bid to a best value system, but has consistently missed the mark. This has resulted in contracts that are not the best value for money, and also makes it more difficult for local contractors to compete.
DevelopmentThe downtown core has yet to recover from the exodus of businesses, citing issues such as lack of parking, paid parking and houseless population. Let’s allow developments to include parking and see next priority re: Houseless Population.
Houseless PopulationHave the hard conversations about the unhoused and work with organizations that are already in our community that have the skills and resources to help tackle this complex issue.
Equal treatmentEquity of citizens no matter what neighborhood they live in.
